More Studies on Music and Memory
A study was done on children between the ages of four and six that showed that music can increase your memory.
The children were divided into two groups, one where the children had music lessons outside of school and the other where the children didn't. The children who had music lessons proved to have a higher level of intelligence in areas such as math, literacy and visual processing. For this reason many school systems are introducing music into the curriculum. So, if music can help your intelligence level increase then if you listen to music while studying it could help you recall those memories easier although you should only be listening to the music as background music and usually classical works best. The type of music that you listen to while studying can also make a difference in how well you remember things. If you listen to music you don’t like then you will most likely have a harder time trying to remember facts than if you listen to music you do like while studying. Listening to music with lyrics makes it harder to focus on the material you are studying so instrumental music is usually best to help you study.
The same type of study was done on people who were recovering from strokes. The group of people who listened to music seemed to be more alert and active than the group of people who didn't listen to anything. But this could have been because the patients enjoyed the music. So the patients were then tested with music that they did not like. The patients’ brains showed to be more active but they did not do well on the tests. When they listened to music they did like their brains seemed to be less active but they performed better on the tests.
Classical and instrumental music can calm the body because it increases the amounts of endorphin in the brain. The calm music can also slow a heartbeat and and lower blood pressure which can be helpful to people who are attempting to overcome an addiction. Rock music can harm humans and can sometimes even cause sickness, not because of the lyrics but because of the rhythms in the music.
